It's Time!!
It’s time to reauthorize and make changes to the Child Care and Development Block Grant. (CCDBG). The CCDBG is federal money that goes to states to assist child care centers and families to provide and find quality child care. The Child Care and Development Grant Act of 2014 has not bee reauthorized or changed since its inception. It is time to reauthorize and make changes to meet the financial needs of families as they seek quality early care and education for their children and for centers as they seek to provide quality programs.
How are funds used?
Maryland uses CCDBG funds to provide child care scholarships for families who need help meeting the financial obligation of the cost of child care.
Funds are also used to provide incentives and financial resources to child care centers to increase program quality through programs such as the Child Care Credential Program and program quality incentive grants.
What is the dilemma?
The structure and amount of funds available have had little change since 2014. The financial needs of families and programs have changed immensely in the past 10 years. A family of four with two children in child care spend s much as 32% of their income for child care expense. That would bankrupt many families were it not for subsides and scholarships.
